Question by imaginator: how does one treat or cure Sciatica?
My back has been killing me for about 3 weeks, did some research online and found out symptoms are exactally that of sciatica. I use back pills and icy hot and sleep with pillow between legs all suggested by webMD but that is about all it says; there must be more I can do. My back is almost always killing me; how long can I expect thios pain to last?

Best answer:

Answer by DrDan
Ok, I am a US Chiropractor. I would reccomend going to the family doctor and getting an accurate diagnosis first. Then, you might ask them about chiropractic or physical therapy, or my favorite, a combo of both. You may need an MRI to determine if there is damage to the disc, and how much. Good Luck

Edit: Decompression has shown some help, the problem is cost. 2500-3000 for treatment is unfortunately the norm, and anyone who tells you that your insurance will cover it isscamming you. Axial Spinal decompression is considered “experimental or investigational” by medicare and all 3rd part payors

Edit:Mr.E, could you please post research articles showing how toggle of atlas can have a direct effect on the lumbar plexus…I’ll wait.

I’ve been suffering from what I am certain is sciatic pain on my left side, something to do with the sciatic nerve. The pain does not allow me to bend down and reach my toes like I used to be able to about a year ago. I cannot stretch my left leg without major pain reaching from my lower back down my leg. I’m tired of this pain and I want it gone. Is there a cure for sciatica?

Question by Bloomers: Sciatica ?
I have been diagnosed 2 times in the last 6 months with sciatica and been put on pain meds and muscles relaxers, what is sciatica and what can be done to help with the pain besides all the drugs? Please help me becasue the pain gets unbearable at times and all my doctor tells me is that it is caused from over use, what am i over useing?

Best answer:

Answer by Shoresy70
Fellow sciatica sufferer: I feel your pain (literally)

I resorted to physical therapy for 6 weeks and religiously performed all my stretching exercises. It definitely helped. I also resorted to sleeping with a pillow under my knees, entering/exiting my car a certain way, getting out of bed a certain way, and much more.

<snip>
“How is sciatica treated?

Treatment for sciatica focuses on relieving pressure and inflammation. Typical sciatica treatments include:

Medical treatments for sciatica — such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, oral steroids, and epidural steroid injections — help to relieve inflammation.

Epidural steroid injections where steroids, with their strong anti-inflammatory effects, are delivered at the origin of the inflamed sciatic nerve roots.

Physical therapy usually starts after adequate pain control, and has an essential role both for the acute episode as well as long term avoidance of further episodes.

Surgery for sciatica might be warranted if the sciatic nerve pain is severe and has not been relieved with appropriate manual or medical treatments. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they have any symptoms of progressive lower extremity weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control.

Article by Edward Finn

Sciatica is an intensely painful condition of lower back and leg pain that can interfere with one’s ability sit, walk or even stand. If you think you have sciatica, you’ll want sciatica relief information that will end the misery for good. Sciatica can be long lasting but it doesn’t have to be permanent if you keep in mind some sciatica relief options that can control the pain and disabling symptoms.
The sciatica relief information you’ll want to know about relates to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from the buttock area down to the back of the leg to the back of the foot. Pain can be felt primarily in the buttocks and radiates down the back of the leg. Sciatica is caused by a compression of the sciatic nerve within the spine or at the level of the sciatic notch in the buttock/pelvic area.

The sciatic nerve pain is usually on one side of the buttock or the other and is constant, with jabbing pain radiating down the leg. The pain is usually worse when you sit down and you can feel a burning sensation or a tingling sensation down your leg at time. The leg can be weak and this can lead to a limp from pain or weakness. Standing up can be a problem and walking can be impossible at times due to the extreme pain.

The basics of sciatica relief information include information on medications you can take and therapies that work to control the pain. You can take over the counter medications like acetaminophen or non steroidal anti inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or naproxen. If these are insufficient, you can take prescription strength anti-inflammatory medication or medication that contains narcotics like codeine or hydrocodone.

Chiropractic treatment can be a piece of sciatic relief information you hadn’t thought of. Many chiropractors are skilled in adjustments that can relieve sciatic nerve pain and in therapies that work for reducing the inflammation associated with the condition. In addition, some are adept at acupuncture, which has its uses in treating sciatic nerve pain.

Physical therapists can provide you with sciatica relief information and can help you overcome the pain of sciatica. They have special therapies and exercises that work well in reducing the pain and inflammation of the sciatic nerve condition. It may take several sessions of physical therapy for the therapy to begin to ease the intense pain of the disease.

If you have sciatica, the sciatica relief information you need should come from a qualified person skilled in treating nerve disease. Most people with sciatica are middle aged, with the condition rare before the age of twenty. Most people are in their 50s when they get the condition and then the incidence declines. If you have recurrent sciatica you need sciatica relief information that includes ways to prevent the condition from reoccurring. This can include different types of exercises and relaxation techniques to lessen stress and take the pressure off the nerve in the back or at the level of the sciatic notch.

Looking for some tips and sites on pain prevention & treatment.

Best answer:

Answer by Trisha M
Sciatica nerve pain affects the lower back and legs. What you call pinched nerve pain are due to bad posture and overweight problems. Rectifying these can help relieve sciatica pain.

Stretching & twisting exercises are crucial for hip, back and leg flexibility. When bending down to pick something, make sure to keep your lower back straight and bend with your legs. This is important as something simple like bending over to tie your shoes can trigger an episode of sciatica.
