Ok, I am a US Chiropractor. I would reccomend going to the family doctor and getting an accurate diagnosis first. Then, you might ask them about chiropractic or physical therapy, or my favorite, a combo of both. You may need an MRI to determine if there is damage to the disc, and how much. Good Luck
Edit: Decompression has shown some help, the problem is cost. 2500-3000 for treatment is unfortunately the norm, and anyone who tells you that your insurance will cover it isscamming you. Axial Spinal decompression is considered “experimental or investigational” by medicare and all 3rd part payors
Edit:Mr.E, could you please post research articles showing how toggle of atlas can have a direct effect on the lumbar plexus…I’ll wait.

is there a cure for sciatica?
Question by Ryudai: is there a cure for sciatica?
I’ve been suffering from what I am certain is sciatic pain on my left side, something to do with the sciatic nerve. The pain does not allow me to bend down and reach my toes like I used to be able to about a year ago. I cannot stretch my left leg without major pain reaching from my lower back down my leg. I’m tired of this pain and I want it gone. Is there a cure for sciatica?

Fellow sciatica sufferer: I feel your pain (literally)
I resorted to physical therapy for 6 weeks and religiously performed all my stretching exercises. It definitely helped. I also resorted to sleeping with a pillow under my knees, entering/exiting my car a certain way, getting out of bed a certain way, and much more.
“How is sciatica treated?
Treatment for sciatica focuses on relieving pressure and inflammation. Typical sciatica treatments include:
Medical treatments for sciatica — such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, oral steroids, and epidural steroid injections — help to relieve inflammation.
Epidural steroid injections where steroids, with their strong anti-inflammatory effects, are delivered at the origin of the inflamed sciatic nerve roots.
Physical therapy usually starts after adequate pain control, and has an essential role both for the acute episode as well as long term avoidance of further episodes.
Surgery for sciatica might be warranted if the sciatic nerve pain is severe and has not been relieved with appropriate manual or medical treatments. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they have any symptoms of progressive lower extremity weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control.

Sciatica Nerve Pain – What Can I Do To Prevent Lower Back Pain & Sciatica Nerve Pain?
Question by Lilian B: Sciatica Nerve Pain – What Can I Do To Prevent Lower Back Pain & Sciatica Nerve Pain?

Sciatica nerve pain affects the lower back and legs. What you call pinched nerve pain are due to bad posture and overweight problems. Rectifying these can help relieve sciatica pain.
Stretching & twisting exercises are crucial for hip, back and leg flexibility. When bending down to pick something, make sure to keep your lower back straight and bend with your legs. This is important as something simple like bending over to tie your shoes can trigger an episode of sciatica.

I am physical therapist, i used back exercises, my question is , where the improvement of sciatica come from?
Question by habal: I am physical therapist, i used back exercises, my question is , where the improvement of sciatica come from?
used exercises were stretching of back muscles, hamstring, calf and planter fascia of foot. Also wall bar exercises (longitudinal traction). Beside improvement of back pain, i noticed that symptoms of sciatica (whatever the cause inflammation, or disc prolapse) nearly resolved and disappeared. What is the main mechanism of , specially sciatic nerve enchroachment by a disc, pain relief

I have RA and a few bulging discs, although I did not have sciatica pain to start with but acute onset lower right abdominal pain. St. Patrick’s Day I stood up and BANG, acute onset lower right and left abdominal pain and sciatica pain. The thing about pain, believe it or not you get ‘used’ to it and yes I am was on morphine before St. Patrick’s Day BANG so it did little to help, had to increase it for three days and then back to the normal daily dose. I had a Public Talk on Physiotherapy last month and I think the theory of back pain stated was the BEST I have heard.
The structures of the back are vertabra, discs, muscles, tendons and nerves, so say FIVE. If you hire five men to dig a big hole and four of those men are lying along the grass verge sunbathing, the one man digging has a lot of work to do and it will take him longer to dig the hole and he will be exhuasted faster than if all five men were digging the hole.
Likewise with the spine, if you are not using one part, say a muscle and we have several muscles to be used, then the body is relying on the vertbra and disc to maintain the upright stance, mobility, and so on. I will admit, while I have undertaken a lot of walking and had good core strength, the rest, legs, arms, tummy, shoulders were not muscle bound but atrophed. I started Pilates and after nine months, one one hour session a week and some exercise at home, the improvement was unbelivable. When I ended up in a wheelchair St.Patrick’s Day everyone screamed ‘Fat lot of good Pilates and Aqua Jogging have done for you!’ I simply replied ‘Well if I had NOT toned my muscles up, do you think I would be able to use a self propelled wheelchair?’
So people with Disc or Sciatica problems will tell you they REALLY do not want to exercise because they are scared of the PAIN! Therefore they are the group of men lying on the grass verge, allowing the one man to dig the hole. By explaining to them that they need to get all the men digging the hole, excercise build the muscle get the core strength going, they will assist and protect the back, thereby relieveing pain. That is what happens, exercise and strengthening the abdominal and back muscles keep the spine aligned and thereby reduce the pain. Four very long weeks using a wheelchair and I am up again and back doing my exercises, long may it last.

Q&A: can sciatica symptoms also affect my arm?
Question by GaLa: can sciatica symptoms also affect my arm?
I know I have sciatica because my leg is burning and numb very very often but lately is also affecting my arm, or I have associated that to my previous symptom?

Answer by gillianprowe
Sciatica is a label that means zero. It is like the label Cake. It can mean a wedding cake or a cup cake, it is not precise. You state you know you have sciatica, but have not been diagnosed by a Doctor and that is a mistake. Never just assume or think, because you could have a more serious condition, that is left undiagnosed, because ‘I thought it was sciatica, that is why I did not bother to see you, a cancerous tumor of my spine, no way, you are joking?’ Burning and Numb do not bring any form of Sciatica to my mind. Sciatica is when the nerve, the sciatic nerves that leaves the spine, runs down the back, into the hip, exits the pelvis and continues down the leg gets trapped and when that happens, pain is the first and on going problem. As to why and where the nerve is being trapped, who knows, could be a muscle that has become inflamed, simple as that.
So I would see a Doctor with these symptoms and get it sorted. best of Luck

You need to see your Doc and certainly not ask for information here. If you have the above symptoms then it is a emergency.
